Incongruity-Resolution
The most common humor mechanism: a setup primes one script, the punchline reveals another.
What is Incongruity-Resolution?
Incongruity-resolution is the workhorse of written comedy. The setup trains the audience's brain to expect one interpretation; the punchline forces a rapid switch to a second, equally valid interpretation that was hidden in plain sight. The laugh is the feeling of two scripts clicking together.
How it works
- 1.The setup activates Script A — an ordinary, expected frame.
- 2.The punchline contains a trigger that reinterprets the setup under Script B.
- 3.Both scripts must be simultaneously compatible with the setup's words.
- 4.The shorter the distance between trigger and realization, the stronger the laugh.
Signals you've found it
- ✓Is there a 'second meaning' hiding in the setup?
- ✓Could the punchline have been predicted by the audience? If yes, weak. If no but it feels obvious in hindsight, strong.
- ✓Can you remove the setup and still have a joke? If yes, it's not really incongruity-resolution.
When to reach for it
Reach for incongruity-resolution when you want a clean, reliable laugh that reads on a page. It works in one-liners, observational stand-up, and sitcom beats. It's the default — about 88% of our 359K corpus uses it — because it's a general-purpose humor engine.

"Son I'm changing your post to the mess hall. Go in there and start washing some dishes." The recruit obeys, and heads to the mess hall. He's cleaned about 3 dishes when the officer walks up again. "Listen here recruit, your new post is in the supply room. I need you to make sure everything is strapped down tight, in case of rough waters."
