Wordplay
One word, two meanings, weaponized.
What is Wordplay?
Wordplay is incongruity-resolution localized to a single word or phrase. The ambiguity isn't at the level of the situation β it's baked into the language itself. Puns, double entendres, homophones, and spoonerisms all live here.
How it works
- 1.A word carries two meanings both compatible with the surrounding sentence.
- 2.The setup makes one meaning feel dominant.
- 3.Context or the punchline forces a reread where the other meaning is suddenly active.
- 4.Often compounds with incongruity-resolution as a secondary mechanism.
Signals you've found it
- βSwap the key word for a synonym β does the joke survive? If no, it's wordplay.
- βDoes the joke work as well spoken as written, or vice versa? Homophones need speech; visual puns need print.
When to reach for it
Use wordplay when you want a compact, shareable joke that lives well in a text message or a meme. Pure wordplay tends to get a groan-laugh rather than a deep laugh β pair it with a stronger mechanism for emotional range.
